In the June issue of Vogue, pop star/actress/The Voice judge Jennifer Lopez can be seen wearing various designer bathing suits and demonstrating that she still has “it” despite the fact that at 42, she’s well over the age at which most Hollywood starlets are taken behind the woodshed and shot. But what does “it” even mean? Here, I will venture to guess what “it” is that J-Lo has in each of her swimsuit photos. Besides a gravity-defying ass and aristocratic bone structure, I mean.

Just when you think you know The Kaiser, he turns around and surprises you with something even more resplendently ridiculous than anything he’s ever done before.

In the music video for French pop star Jean Roch‘s song “Saint-Tropez” (featuring Snoop Dogg!), Karl Lagerfeld has a small but stirring cameo, kicking things off with a ringing endorsement of the luxury vacation spot. Surrounded by fluffy clouds, the singer asks the godlike designer (dressed in white, naturally) “is it paradise?” “You were never told that Saint-Tropez is paradise?” he replies sagely, at which point the Doggfather kicks things off in earnest.

While I am getting a little bit worried that Snoop Dogg is just saying yes to everything he’s offered these days (cf. Katy Perry), he’s never met a video he can’t imbue with greatness, and this one is no exception. Even if it does remind me a little bit of that 30 Rock Countess LuAnn parody “La Piscine”:

In other Lagerfeldian news, he told The Telegraph that he reads lots of books to keep his brain in shape, saying “I am a brain-bodybuilder. Schwarzenegger of the brain.” Clearly, he used up his last shred of humility apologizing to Adele.

But first, a word about Dark Shadows.

People seem very indignant about the movie. I heard on fellow remark that “this was our thing, and Tim Burton wasn’t allowed to take it away from us!”

Really? You were around in 1966?

Fortunately, I was!

Dark Shadows was a terrible show. I mean, it was campy and hilarious, but it was on at 4:00 in the afternoon and its prime market was schoolchildren. It was famous largely because budgetary constraints meant actors had to do everything in one take, so they periodically forget other characters names. And it was nicknamed “mike shadows” because of the number of times you see the boom mike being lowered in front of people.

It wasn’t a sacred relic. The new movie is pretty funny, and Eva Green looks absolutely smashing in a red sequined dress. It’s fine.

Bill Murray Dressed Like A Crazy Clown At Cannes

The Cannes film festival is underway and the cast of Moonrise Kingdom is out promoting it in the French sunshine (not the other sunshines). Moreover, mythical figure himself Bill Murray rolled up to the photocall dressed like, well, a fashion blogger. He mixed so many prints! Three prints! That’s more than BryanBoy and the others ones when they’re trying to get the attention of street style photographers.

…Only it’s a lot less annoying when Bill Murray does it. The actor topped off his clashing plaids with a patchwork blazer and Ray-Ban Wayfarers. Here is beside costar and beautiful lady Tilda Swinton (in Haider Ackermann):

Jil Sander Is Selling A Beanie With A Veil For $440

One of the more popular editorial accessories of the moment is Jil Sander‘s so-called “veil beanie” for Spring 2012. That’s it, up there on models Daria Strokous and Hanne Gaby Odiele (the photo’s by Tommy Ton). British milliner Stephen Jones designed the piece, which the brand’s ecommerce store describes as a “lycra/polypropylene blend hat with lapel and contrast veil.”

While the hat is nothing more than a beanie with a veil, Jil Sander sets the value at $440 and, frankly, they could set it a lot higher what with its runaway popularity (thanks, Anna Dello Russo). Here’s the thing, though, even with the most rudimentary sewing skills–can you, for example, hold a needle between your fingers?–this look can be replicated for less than $20.

But then, of course, you wouldn’t get this:

So, to those of you who sew/craft, this is ridiculous, right? To those of you who can’t, this is… still ridiculous, right?

Also, here’s a good DIY tutorial, in case you need more help than “sew a swatch of fishnet onto a fucking beanie.”

Thin Models Actually Don’t Make Most Women Buy Clothes

There’s no one reason why fashion models are extremely thin. You’ll hear everything from clients, sample sizes, and agency demands to competition between models and the public that buys magazines featuring them. One of the more steadfast beliefs, though, is that models are thin because fashion is “aspirational” and women want to buy more than clothes: they want some abstract impossible thinness, youth, beauty, etc. As one researcher says, “It’s better to use extremely thin models because that’s what makes women feel bad about themselves and want to buy the products.”

A recent study (and hopefully also your own capacity for critical thought), however, suggests that may not be the case: most women are actually more likely to buy clothing modeled on someone similar in size and shape. Because obviously. And, also obviously, what falls out of this is not that we should ban skinny models but… that brands should show models with a diversity of figures so different women can see how clothes flatter and fall on different shapes.

Explains modeling agent and study head Ben Barry of his thesis:

My research, which was funded by the Ogilvy Foundation, took me to cities across Canada and the United States, where I surveyed and facilitated focus groups with more than 2,500 women. They ranged in age from 14 to 65 and in dress size from 0 to 18, and they reflected a range of ethnicities. I recorded their responses to mock fashion ads—which I created for my study—that featured models who varied in size, age and race but all wore the same Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress. Save for the models, the ads were identical. My findings were surprisingly intuitive and yet revolutionary within the fashion industry.

And what happened?

My study found that women increased their purchase intentions by more than 200 percent when the models in the mock ads were their size. In the subgroup over size 6, women increased their purchase intentions by a dramatic 300 percent when they saw curvier models. Conversely, when women saw models who didn’t reflect their size, they decreased their purchase intentions by 60 percent, and women over size 6 dropped their purchase intentions by 76 percent.

It wasn’t just size that swayed decision making, it was diversity of all kinds, such as age: “Consumers increased their purchase intentions by over 175 percent when they saw models who reflected their age; in particular, women over the age of 35 increased their purchase intentions by 200 percent when they saw older models,” and race: “black consumers were 1.5 times more likely to purchase a product advertised by a black model.”

But that’s not all, Barry chanced on another startling insight that proponents of diversity have been championing for a while: women who see models that reflect them physically actually feel better about themselves:

I also discovered that women—especially those seldom reflected in fashion ads—felt beautiful and confident when they saw models who reflected their traits and felt motivated to buy the dress. When one mature woman saw an older model, she explained: “[The model] does more than make me feel beautiful; she inspires me to go out and get this dress and celebrate my beauty.” While some women in my study felt insecure when they saw idealized models, their insecurity didn’t translate to purchase intentions as the industry hopes; it actually turned them off the product. As one of the participants summarized: “Ads like this want us to be part of their world, but they have the opposite effect for me. I feel excluded.”

Of course there’s the question of whether or not advertising has any business being a mechanism to make people feel better about themselves (and how valuable such a thing would be) but surely it’s better than making women feel horrible about themselves, as many studies have found extreme thinness in advertising to do.

The whole piece is definitely worth your time, though as Barry says up top… the results are quite intuitive: while it’s true that clothes hang differently on different people, a size 8 is probably more likely to purchase a dress seen on a 6-10 than on a 2 or a 14. So, for those of you who see a piece in an ad and go looking for it: how much does the model’s body type affect your decision making?

Also, we imagine the influence of differing models is even more profound in online shopping, where the option to try something on isn’t really there.

Clockwise from Jennifer Lopez‘s character in The Wedding Planner is a passable Cameron Diaz torso, a distractingly elongated Brooklyn Decker, a marionette of Anna Kendrick and Elizabeth Banks as a smalltown weather girl with absurdly huge, eerily motionless hair. Great job! This is, of course, the humid wing of a wax museum meant to represent the cast of What To Expect When You’re Expecting.

Michael “Magnificent Penis” Fassbender is the dashing cover model of GQ‘s June issue, which promises to teach readers (with Fassbender’s help) how to “amp up your sex appeal.” (Wear nicer clothes, preferably the ones advertised in the magazine, is the basic jist of it.) But is the Fassbender we see in the cover editorial really a suave man worthy of emulation, or a Shame-type sex addict trapped in the darkest depths of desperation? Let’s take a look.

Ladies, have you ever caught a glimpse of yourself in the mirror at the gym only to realize that your vagina is split down the middle by your pants to reveal an unseemly cameltoe?

Of course you have. We all have. But as of now, we need suffer no more, because a woman named Shannon — who calls herself a “cameltoe advocate,” by which I think she means anti-cameltoe advocate — has designed and patented the one and only CAMELFLAGE PANTY.

The Camelflage panty is exactly what it sounds like, but I really couldn’t do a better job describing it that Shannon does on her website, so here you go:

Cute tight little yoga pants, front row, right by the big mirrors for the whole class to check out my yoga poses, and something else…the dreaded…”cameltoe.” That’s where the idea for Camelflage was conceived…I designed a patent pending women’s panty that has a built in flexible, breathable, insert to smooth out her “Labia Majora” AKA “cameltoe.” Covering the insert is a Sportek wicking fabric that pulls moisture away from your body and keeps you dry.

On the one hand, I love that she actually says “labia majora,” because who ever calls the various parts of a woman’s vagina by their correct terms in such specific detail? At the same time, I don’t think it needs to be capitalized, and I also don’t think it needs to be in quotations, because it actually is the labia majora.

Anyway, this is really a delight. I hope things work out for Shannon, and also I hope that a lot of women are spared the utter humiliation of an errant ‘toe thanks to this fancy new design.
