It’s a night full of guest stars, as Shannen Doherty returns to “90210″ and both members of Outkast end up on different shows. Plus we find out who will be going to the “Dancing With The Stars” finals and we once again deal with the clash of the egos on “House”. Will House win or will Foreman? Well, I think that House is leading 3-0 from previous battles, but Foreman is bound to win one eventually.

Hot Picks for November 18, 2008

90210 (The CW) at 8pm

Shannen Doherty is back, and the divide between her and Kelly widens as Kelly attempts to counsel Annie and Naomi not to let a guy come between them. But Naomi starts hanging out with a new group of girls, leading to a lunchroom showdown with Annie (this sounds a lot like Grease.) Also, Annie, Naomi and their family deal with the shock of Annie’s half-brother Sean coming back to town.

House (Fox) at 8pm

The team takes on the case of a 16-year-old factory manager who claims that she is an emancipated minor living on her own and supporting herself since her parents passed away, but the team find out the hard way that the girl may not be telling them the truth. Also, Foreman attempts to prove he can work without House by taking on a pediatric patient, but things don’t turn out like he hopes. And there will probably be at least 2-3 almost-kisses between House and Cuddy, just because the writers treat them like teens sending each other “Do you like me?” notes.

The Mentalist (CBS) at 9pm

Intent on proving a so-called psychic is a fraud - as well as a killer - Patrick arranges a seance to expose the murderer. I hope there’s a Ouija Board somewhere in there.

Dancing With
the Stars (ABC) at 9pm

This is the last results show before the finals next week. I actually watched last night and feel completely qualified to say that Cody Linley will be the one going home tonight, mostly because his and Julianne Hough’s outfits last night were bloody awful. If you’re totally into this show, you should track down the British version, “Strictly Come Dancing” (check YouTube) which I saw last weekend and is much better.

Fringe (Fox) at 9pm

When a child music prodigy is abducted by a serial kidnapper, it’s discovered that a sequence of flashing lights appeared at the abduction, which Walter links back to his bunkmate at St. Claire’s Hospital. Much to Peter’s dismay, Olivia encourages a return visitation for Walter, and Walter’s determination to help ends up having chilling ramifications. This show becomes more like the X-Files every week, and not in a good way.

The Shield (FX) at 10pm

This show is in its final season and deserves more love than it’s getting. Also, Andre Benjamin from Outkast is guest-starring tonight, and in one of life’s funny coincidences his bandmate Big Boi will be on “Law & Order: SVU” at the exact same time. On this show, Olivia joins the Strike Team to track down a Mexican drug dealer while Claudette investigates the death of a woman linked to the team.

It’s sweeps, so it’s time for the networks to pull out the ridiculous star power they have been holding for months to help otherwise sluggish shows. NBC’s having a lot of issues drawing eyeballs, so execs have brought back their stars from yesteryear (well, it seems that long) with guest appearances by Jennifer Aniston and Anthony Edwards. But if gimmick casting isn’t your thing, there are a ton of drama-filled reality shows to pick from, as well as some neat plot twists on “The Office” and “Ugly Betty”.

Noted in local newspaper reviews is Sammy’s hot-temper and lack of customer service, which does not bode well for a family eatery. When Gordon starts criticizing the food, especially his mother’s lasagna recipe, and the kitchen staff starts turning against Sammy, his temper flares out of control and he shuts the restaurant down himself! Will Sammy be able to reconcile with Gordon and his staff or will his doors stay closed forever?

Believing they were set up, Dean lashes out at Sam for trusting Ruby, so Sam tells him what happened during those months Dean was in Hell and how Ruby saved his life. Gates tries to pull some strings in the ER to help his homeless war hero.
Tonight’s lineup features plenty of guitars and cowboy hats, but also offers the season premiere of “Top Chef” and a full lineup of crime dramas on CBS.

8 p.m.

The 42nd Annual CMA Awards (ABC): If you like country music or just like to snark about the outfits that folks wear to country music award shows, this is the one for you. Brad Paisley (known for his funny songs, including one that talks about looking for ticks) and Carrie Underwood of “American Idol” fame are hosting. If you’re on Twitter, I’ll be doing live coverage tonight.

America’s Next Top Model (The WB): Paulina offers the girls advice on how to successfully model with a variety of items, including fish and toilet paper. Back at the house the girls decide to unwind by inviting some local guys over for an evening full of games. And I’m sure that will lead to no drama at all, because none of the games would ever involve alcohol.

Knight Rider (NBC): Knight Industries is hot on the trail of a Bonnie & Clyde-esque criminal couple, only to discover their true identities have a serious impact on a national congressional race. I swear this show sounds like “Miami Vice” with a newer car.

Bones (Fox): Booth and Brennan investigate the scene where a body was uncovered during a botched practice police raid. The team identifies the body as a struggling inventor’s father who had recently reunited with his son. But when a second body surfaces, the team is led on a trail of deception to find out who was the actual con-man in the inventor’s life. Meanwhile, Booth’s younger brother Jared (guest star Brendan Fehr) moves to D.C. to take a job at the Pentagon, and Brennan, smitten with Jared, agrees to go on a date with him to a White House function. This leads her to learn information about Booth’s past and give her a far greater understanding into her partner’s motives

The New Adventures of Old Christine (CBS): Christine is thrilled when a talent scout recruits Ritchie to audition for a television commercial after his shockingly great performance in a school play, but Richard refuses to let him go.

Monarchy: The Royal Family At Work (PBS): This documentary series is kinda groundbreaking because of the huge access the Royal Family gave to the photographers for filming. Tonight’s segment covers Queen Elizabeth II’s trip to America last year to commemerate the founding of the first English colony of Jamestown, and it also includes a state dinner at the White House.

8:30 p.m.

Gary, Unmarried (CBS): When Vanessa asks Gary to take her on a real date, he tells her that he’s taking her to a very special restaurant just for them, which Vanessa discovers was the same restaurant he and Allison used to frequent. Really, why do people actually think that their SO won’t figure these things out?

Time Warp (Discovery): The show demonstrates how a whip cracks and how dogs shake water off their fur. Fascinating.

9 p.m.

Criminal Minds (CBS): Dr. Reid embarks on his own investigation into the murder of a young boy years earlier in Las Vegas that he strongly believes has a connection to his own childhood.

Life (NBC): In a plotline sure to make everyone feel really safe for their holiday shopping, a murder takes place in a mall on the biggest shopping day of the year. Crews and Reese end up searching for more than just the killer. In a moment of confusion the body disappears, Crews and Reese are then faced with the task of tracking down both the body and the killer in one of the largest malls in America on one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

Stylista (The WB): The contestants hit Henry Bendel to shop for an outfit for Anne, who is taking a last-minute trip. The group breaks up into teams to design and direct a photo shoot featuring a Tory Burch outfit. Tory appears on the show as a guest judge and helps Anne and Joe decide which team made her outfit look the best on the page. Anne and Joe send two contestants home for poor performance.

Mythbusters (Discovery): Common phrases are studied. I would assume that these would be stuff like “A penny saved is a penny earned.”

Ghost Hunters (Sci-Fi): TAPS recalls their favorite investigations.

Friday Night Lights (DirecTV)

Inside the NFL (Showtime)

10 p.m.

Law & Order (NBC): Rick Devon’s (guest star Bradford Cover) body is found murdered in a park, and his death is automatically assumed to be drug related. Upon investigation, the detectives stumble upon a key in a nearby bathroom that could potentially have been left behind by the killer. Prints on the key lead the detectives to fa ormer felon, Diego Cardenas (guest star Carlos Leon), who has cleaned up his act and now works at a home for mentally challenged adults. After questioning Diego, the detectives discover a hidden relationship between the murder victim and another resident of the home that guides the detectives to uncover a painful family secret that could expose the killer.

CSI: NY (CBS): Investigation of a floating crime scene leads the team into the world of “SecretU” an art-house world of true confessionals where 20-somethings divulge their darkest secrets with deadly results. So basically it sounds like Post Secret meeting the Grim Reaper.

Sons of Anarchy (FX): Jax’s loyalty to SAMCRO is tested, and Abel may get more than he bargained for after being released from the hospital.

Top Chef (Bravo): This is the season premiere for the show, which is based in NYC for this round. Their first challenge is to represent the ethnic flavors that the city is famous for. So there should be at least two reworkings of thin-crust pizza.

South Park (Comedy Central): Tonight’s show takes aim at “High School Musical”, which should be hilarious.

Parking Wars (A&E): In case you were wondering if there were any ideas left for reality shows, apparently there are. In this ep, a parking officer skirmishes with drunk partyers and a man tries to elude a parking boot.

Prototype This (Discovery): The team tries to recreate a water park slide in a backyard. Didn’t they already do that on “The Girls Next Door”?

10:30 p.m.

Chocolate News (Comedy Central): If you didn’t see the post-election show last week, it was awesome and David Allen Grier became the 2000th person to cry onscreen after Obama’s win. Tonight’s show involves “nutritious crack”, which sounds way too “Chappelle’s Show” for me.

Dancing With The Stars Performance Recap Show (ABC): Insert one cliched line about a contestant walking on air, and insert another about one falling back to earth.

The Biggest Loser (NBC): This week’s episode begins with host Alison Sweeney telling the contestants that they will start competing as individuals now instead of as teams. Then comes the surprise return of all the eliminated contestants, and the revelation that only one will return to the game, and that decision won’t be determined by weight loss as in past seasons.

90210 (The WB): Upon seeing Annie and Ethan kissing, Naomi decides to take matters into her own hands to get back at Annie for her deceit. The students are in shock about the news that Ryan hooked up with one of the students, Kimberly, and that he has taken a leave of absence. Kelly returns from her trip to visit Dylan and confronts Ryan about the allegations. Harry and Debbie throw a party for Annie’s sixteenth birthday, and everyone except Naomi is surprised when someone from Annie’s past shows up.

House (Fox): When an agoraphobic man falls mysteriously ill and adamantly refuses to leave his home to get treatment at the hospital, House and the team go to him to figure out what might be wrong. as the patient’s condition worsens, House and the team scheme to get the man into the hospital for surgery without causing any further physical trauma or emotional anxiety. Meanwhile, Cameron and Chase attempt to work through some kinks in their relationship (’bout freaking time), and House deals with an annoying itch that I’m sure lots of women would love to scratch. Did I say that?

NCIS (CBS): Gibbs second-guesses his own judgment when Vance assigns him a rookie to aid his team’s investigation into a deadly bank robbery.

Lincoln Heights (ABC Family): Cassie’s parents chaperone the prom, where Cassie must see Charles and Sage together.

MyNetworkTV Special: Heroes At Home (MNT): Six American heroes discuss their experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan.

8:30 p.m.

Gavin & Stacey (BBC America): Gavin and Stacey go hunting for a flat, where they encounter a strange landlord. Nessa goes to England for a night of bowling. What, no bowling alleys in Wales?

9 p.m.

Dancing With The Stars Results Show (ABC): See above preview of the recap show.

The Mentalist (CBS): While investigating the case of a murdered casino owner, Patrick Jane uses his mentalist skills to ultimately entrap the killer, and win big at the card tables. Sounds an awful lot like Numb3rs.

Privileged (The WB): Upset that Laurel is still giving her the cold shoulder, Megan (JoAnna Garcia) is nonetheless excited that her college pal Caryn, who has just been promoted from assistant to junior editor at The New Yorker magazine. When Sage and Rose’s publicist learns that Rose and Sage have musical talent, she books them a gig performing at the opening of a hot new Miami nightclub, where the girls are thrilled to have a red carpet encounter with Perez Hilton (guest starring as himself).

Fringe (Fox): Every second counts when a strange, almost-otherworldly parasite mysteriously attaches itself to the internal organs of a dying FBI agent. With a life on the line and strong suspicions of a Pattern connection, Agent Dunham rushes to Germany to meet with an imprisoned man who reveals disconcerting details of a much larger threat. Meanwhile, Peter and Walter attempt to help Olivia by tapping into a dead man’s brainwaves .

Dirty Jobs (Discovery): The host visits a mannequin factory, which doesn’t sound particularly dirty. But a construction crew destroys a trailer park to make way for a mall, which does sound nasty.

10 p.m.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (NBC): For the Homicide fans, Munch is back! When a boy is lit on fire, Detectives Elliot Stabler and John Munch investigate the malicious crime. In search of a lead, the Detectives end up at Blessed Heart High School, where their student escort, Max Matarazzo (guest star Jesse McCartney) introduces them to the Blessed Heart Chastity Circle’ and senior Alec Bernardi (guest star Philip Ettinger). Alec admits to hurting the victim, but in turn opens a new door for the detectives when he unveils a group of pregnant teenage girls. A strange web of secrets and bad blood in this “close-knit” neighborhood offers a challenge for the detectives.

Without A Trace (CBS): The team tries to find a missing bank manager who forecloses on people’s homes and discovers a deep dark secret which may be related to her disappearance. Meanwhile, Jack is reinstated as head of the department.

Eli Stone (ABC): In the aftermath of their law firm’s split, Eli and Jordan struggle to retain associates; the firm’s largest clients opt to go with rival firm Posner/Klein. At Taylor’s urging, Eli persuades Matt to help him on a case involving a Homeland Security arrest to show him how rewarding pro bono law can be and convince him to stay with the new firm that Jordan and Eli are building. Meanwhile, Eli’s latest vision reveals the truth about Maggie’s fianc, which ultimately leads to a defining decision about their relationship.

The Shield (FX): Corinne says she’ll be a go-between for Vic and Shane, but also agrees to cooperate with Dutch and Claudette. Claudette assigns Ronnie and Julian to investigate the murder of a high school student, which means Ronnie’s not at the barn to intercept a letter to Claudette.

Real Housewives of Atlanta (Bravo): Sheree takes Kim on a boating trip, but she also hopes her clothing line will set sail. Also, NeNe pursues getting a DNA test to determine who her father really is. Wow, that whole “I KNOW my daddy isn’t my real daddy!” thing lasted two whole weeks.

Paris Hilton’s My New BFF (MTV): In Vegas, Paris challenges the women to pick up some men and bring them back to the mansion. I’d imagine that “Hey, do you want to appear on an MTV reality show and make a few thousand bucks?” would work for most of them.

Coolio’s Rules (Oxygen): Coolio caters his first banquet with the help of a “saucy” new catering manager, but his relationship with his latest girlfriend is left in the cold.

Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is (BET): Keyshia works with a life coach and invites more people in her family to live with her in Atlanta. I hope her house is as big as some of the ones in “Real Housewives in Atlanta”.

It should have been a grand time to remember the good ol’ days of sudsy primetime TV, as the cast of “Dallas” reunited at the famed Southfork Ranch to celebrate the show’s 30th anniversary.

But after more fans showed up than expected, the event ended up causing as much drama as J.R. ever did on the show. And some fans who had shelled out up to $1,000 to get a chance to meet stars like Larry Haglund and Patrick Duffy were left feeling cheated.

“It was a huge letdown — totally not worth it,” Elizabeth Knight told Dallas station WFAA after paying $400 but not getting to meet any of the stars. “I do feel like I got really ripped off.”

The organizer of the event told The Associated Press that about 4,000 fans showed up — far more than the 2,000 planners had expected — and that it was management by the folks who run Southfork that kept some people from getting what they paid for. However, officials from the ranch disputed the number of people who showed up, saying there was only about 1,500 to 2,000 people there, and said that the event’s organizers were in charge of security and organizing the access given to different groups of fans.

In any case, event organizers said they plan to work out some sort of compensation for people who paid more for tickets and didn’t get to meet the cast. In the meantime, one woman at the even, Joy Garcia, ended up benefitting from the mixup.

“We were extremely happy that we were in the $100 section because we got the same access that everyone else did,” she said.

If anyone out there has put a bet on how long it would take for Hollywood to greenlight some sort of project based on the life of President-Elect Barack Obama, hope you took the under on 48 hours.

HBO announced Tuesday that they have acquired the rights to an as-yet-untitled documentary (anyone want to lay a bet on it being named “Yes, We Can” or “Change Has Come”?) directed by Amy Rice and Alicia Sam and produced by Edward Norton and his production company, Class 5 Films.

The movie will document the journey taken by Obama in moving from a speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2004 as an Illinois state senator to becoming the newly-elected President of the United States.

According to a statement from HBO, Rice began work on the doc in early 2006 after being inspired by Obama’s “dynamism, potential and star-making speech” to the DNC before becoming the junior U.S. senator from Illinois. After being approached by Norton, Obama and his team granted the filmmakers access to him and his staff, including making a trip with him to Africa in the summer of 2006.

When Obama began his campaign for the Democratic nomination for President in 2007, the filmmakers stayed on the campaign trail with him. HBO officials said that shooting will continue through the Inauguration for a 2009 premiere.

There is a bit of recent history to fall back on in making a warts-and-all documentary about a Presidential candidate. If you haven’t seen 1993’s “The War Room“, which documents the battle-like mentality of the first Bill Clinton Presidential campaign, you really should. I would imagine that Obama’s documentary will be very similar in showing something strangely ironic — his hard-fought victory over Clinton’s wife Hillary in the 2008 primaries.

However, may I speak for all concerned when I hope that this project in no way resembles the documentary videos shot of Obama’s fellow candidate John Edwards by filmmaker Rielle Hunter, who Edwards has since admitted to having an affair with during the project in 2006 (and rumored to have fathered a child with since.) To add insult to injury, the doc videos are really horribly done.

Tags: barack obama documentary, edward norton, hbo
Share This

8 p.m.

My Name Is Earl (NBC): When a mysterious man moves next door, an item jumps to the top of Earl’s list. Also, Joy becomes obsessed with winning a science fair so she’ll have some spending money. That should be as much fun as her trying to win the beauty pageant in a previous show.

Kitchen Nightmares (Fox): Chef Ramsay is called to the quaint little town of Cranbury, NJ, to help two friends who bought Hannah & Mason’s, a French bistro they used to work in. Both owners and the 23-year-old manager lack experience and passion, creating a recipe for disaster. When Gordon finds out that many of the staff’s paychecks bounce week after week he knows he has to make some major changes to keep this restaurant afloat. However, during Valentine’s Day dinner service, he stumbles upon the grossest, most disgusting, most appalling thing he’s ever seen in a kitchen cooler and is forced to shut the restaurant down on their busiest night of the year. Will Chef Ramsay be able to get through to the inexperienced, lazy owners or will he be forced to crush their dreams?

Smallville (The WB): Clark receives an anonymous package containing the crystal that Tess found in the Arctic. When he removes the crystal, it activates and sends him and a visiting Lois to the Phantom Zone where they run into Kara. Kara opens a portal for Lois to return but Zod’s wife Faora escapes with her and takes over Lois’ body. A possessed Lois goes on a rampage in Metropolis.

Survivor: Gabon (CBS): After one power drunk castaway decides to take the game into their own hands, the tribes are faced with a brutal endurance challenge that comes down to a nail-biting showdown

Ugly Betty (ABC):”Crush’d” Betty works overtime to get the attention of her cute neighbor, struggling musician Jesse (guest star Val Emmich). Meanwhile, Betty’s life gets even more complicated when a maxed out and suddenly homeless Amanda becomes her temporary roommate. And in other Mode developments, Marc vacillates when Cliff (guest star David Blue) wants them to move in together.

8:15 p.m.

NFL Football (NFL Network): Denver Broncos at Cleveland Browns

8:30 p.m.

Kath & Kim (NBC): Kath lets Phil fulfill one of his fantasies involving strawberries even though she is horribly allergic — a fact she keeps secret. Kim convinces Kath that Phil could easily be keeping secrets too and perhaps she does not know anything about her fiance. Kath becomes paranoid and begins to believe that she is engaged to a complete stranger. Meanwhile, Kim refuses to go back to Craig until he gets rid of his dog Ginger. In order to teach him a lesson, she and her friend Tina go speed dating at the Courtyard Marriott.

9 p.m.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (CBS): When the CSI team investigates a case involving the world of domination, Grissom pays a visit to Lady Heather to help find some answers

Supernatural (The WB): Sam and Dean investigate a small town where the wishing well really works. A teddy bear comes to life, someone wins the lottery and the town geek gets a hot girlfriend. The brothers realize that while everyone is happy now, the end result will be disastrous.

The Office (NBC): Dwight and Jim are shocked when they get the results of the annual customer survey report. Pam and Jim decide they want to spend every minute together using their Bluetooth phones. Meanwhile, Angela and Andy pick an unusual location for their wedding.

Grey’s Anatomy (ABC): The Chief announces to the residents that a solo surgery will be awarded, and the news sends them into a competitive frenzy. Meanwhile Derek turns to Bailey for advice when he feels Cristina is interfering in his relationship with Meredith (this sounds very sexist of me, but is Derek actually a girl? He sure doesn’t act like a guy), and Erica discovers a shocking connection between one of her surgical residents and a longtime patient.

Kitchen Nightmares (Fox): Chef Ramsay visits St. Clair Shores, MI, where three local body builders have taken over Jack’s Waterfront, a popular spot for boaters during the summer months. However, with the imitation seafood and lack of management, this restaurant is slowly going under. With the owners and head chef willing to take Gordon’s advice, they hope to turn the restaurant around so that it will prosper year-round. However, things start to flounder when the general manager cares more about drinking and socializing with the clientele than keeping the restaurant in business (note: this same thing seems to happen every week with either the GM or the head cook.) Will the body builders be able to command this ship or will Jack’s Waterfront sink?

Dragon’s Den (BBC America): If you love “The Apprentice”, you shouldn’t miss this show, which is a megahit in Britain.

9:30 p.m.

30 Rock (NBC): Oprah’s on! Do I need more? Okay, Liz flies to Chicago to get out of jury duty and on her return flight ends up with an assigned seat next to Oprah. Liz jumps at the opportunity to share a few problems with the talk show host for advice. While Liz is away, Tracy and Jennas feud continues leading to a wacky social experiment to prove whose argument is right. Meanwhile, Jack’s morality is tested by Kenneth after an Olympics snafu.

10 p.m.

ER (NBC): Heard the rumors that this isn’t the last season of ER? Me too? I’m really not sure they can do much with it. Nonetheless, Morris takes Chaz under his wing and teaches him some risky medical procedures much to the chagrin of Dr. Banfield. Neela gets upset when Dr. Banfield undermines her authority with her intern. Meanwhile, Gates over steps his bounds with Sam.

Eleventh Hour (CBS): When an aggressive and deadly virus infects a demolition site in Pittsburgh, Dr. Hood is called in to contain a potentially lethal outbreak.

Life On Mars (ABC): Whoopi Goldberg guest-stars as a DJ. A racial confrontation is triggered between the African Americans and Puerto Ricans in the neighborhood when a young African American girl’s body is discovered thrown from a rooftop. Working the case with Sam Tyler and the squad is the cop Sam considers his mentor in 2008 a much younger Fletcher Bellow who doesn’t recognize his future protg. Tangling with the Black Liberation Army, who is intent on hunting down the Puerto Rican suspect first to levy their own kind of justice, Sam, Bellow and the detectives of the 1-2-5 are in a race against time if Angel Ramirez is to have any chance to answer for the crime. But in the end, Sam must battle the racial attitudes in his own precinct most notably Lt. Hunt and Detective Carling and a dramatic standoff on the same rooftop leads to gunshots being fired.

50 Cent: The Money and the Power (MTV): Basically, hip-hop star megastar 50 Cent mentors a bunch of hopefuls who hope to win $100,000. There has to be something more interesting about it than that.

Celebrity Rehab w/ Dr. Drew (VH1): Last week they were all having bad withdrawal (watching Amber Smith writhing on the floor in a seizure really sucked) and that will probably continue into this week. Also, it will be interesting to see who will smack Gary Busey first for being nosy and sanctimonious. Will it be Jeff or maybe Tawny or Nicki? Seriously, he makes me miss the Baldwin brother.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (FX): The gang at Paddy’s Pub try to rewrite history by saying the bar was responsible for breaking the Liberty Bell. Sounds like a “Cheers” script.

LA Ink (TLC): The Game stops by to get inked, and Corey’s long commute to the shop keeps him away from his kids.

Tim Gunn’s House of Style (Bravo): Eliza has a grungy sense of style that doesn’t impress her conservative in-laws. Tim tries to give her a makeover before her gig in New York.

10:30 p.m.
