CBS has shot a series of videos about the real Allison DuBois that I’m going to be sharing on the site. In this one, we hear what the people on the show really think of the real-life psychic. The general consensus: she’s creepy. Okay, so they don’t actually say that, but as Patricia Arquette points out, a lot of the guys are really freaked out by DuBois. She says that Miguel Sandoval starts sweating any time she’s around! Even producer Larry Teng (who has stopped by this site a couple of times lately), is a little wary when she’s on set.

The other funny part about this is when Glenn Gordon Caron talks about how different he made the Allison DuBois character from the real Allison DuBois, and DuBois herself says that Caron has no idea how much some of the storylines he’s written has mirrored their life.

A Trip Down Memory Lane – Patricia Arquette in Dillinger

Sometimes you find the funniest things on YouTube. Today, I stumbled across a TV commercial from 1990 for a made-for-TV movie about notorious American bank rober, John Dillinger. Patricia Arquette stars in Dillinger as Polly Hamilton, Dillinger’s girlfriend who was with him when he was gunned down by police in 1934.

She’s not in the trailer very much, just a line at the end, but it’s still fun seeing Arquette in period costuming.

Fun fact: The part of Polly Hamilton was played by Leelee Sobieski in the 2009 film, Public Enemies.

I wonder if Jamie from last week’s episode is a member of TRAAAPD?

For those of you who haven’t seen it, Taylor Swift did a great job hosting SNL this past weekend. One of my favorite sketches was a PSA she did for TRAAAPD (Teens Raising Awareness About Awful Parent Drivers). In it, Swift decries all of the flack teens have been getting for texting while driving and similar offenses, when parents are the ones doing way worse things. Some examples: “driving while lecturing,” “driving while having a sarcastic conversation with the car in front of you,” and “driving while revealing family secrets.”

I’m sure Jamie would want to add, “driving while hopped up on pills and blaming the ensuing car crash on your innocent daughter” to that list. Or at the very least, “driving while hopped up on pills and blaming the ensuing car crash on your innocent daughter when the car you crashed into involves a family of psychics.” All very good reasons why maybe teens get a bad rap when it comes to driving.

Even though this is the, ahem, best place on the internet to read about all things Medium, it is not the only place. Here are a few other places around the web that are talking about Medium.

I always wait to read Brett’s reviews over at CliqueClack until I write mine here, then I compare. While I thought “New Terrain” was one of the weaker episodes so far this season, he really enjoyed it. You should definitely check it out; it’s a good counterpoint.
Ava Gacser enjoyed Joe’s Dawn of the Dead shout out in “Bite Me” as much as we all did.
BuddyTV has an interview up with High School Musical 3’s Matt Prokup, who is starring in this week’s episode, “Once in a Lifetime” as Ariel’s possibly-killer boyfriend.

Press Release for Medium 6×08 “Once in a Lifetime”

I may not have been totally in love with last week’s episode, but I have high hopes for this week’s, for several reasons: 1) It seems to focus on the kids, which I always find fun. Allison thinks Ariel’s new boyfriend is a murderer, which is awesome, and Bridgette gets into trouble for posting embarrassing videos of some guy on the internet(!). 2) Amy Pietz (Caroline in the City) is guest-starring, and I love her. 3) David Arquette is returning to direct this episode.

Sounds pretty good, huh?

Review: Medium 6×07 – New Terrain

Holy product placement, Allison. Medium clearly has a new relationship with a certain big-name American car company that I do not feel the need to promote further, as they are not paying me a dime, and it definitely showed in this week’s episode. Allison’s car is involved in an accident, but surprisingly, she’s not the one causing it with her horribly unsafe driving habits. The accident is an excuse to get Allison into a brand-new, product-placed earth-killing SUV.

Even though most of the plot that revolved around said SUV was little more than a heavy-handed commercial, there was a lot to enjoy: I thought the main idea of her satellite radio allowing her to hear the conversations going on in the cars around her was really fun, as was her desire to just dork out when “YMCA” started playing on the radio. Mostly, I enjoyed how much the technological advancements of her new car versus her old Volvo confused her. Her perplexed look when it came to the GPS is pretty much universal.

As for the main bank robbery plot, it was kind of blah for me. Todd Louiso, who was amazing in High Fidelity, was underused as the man who was forced into performing the robbery, and the resolution was a little bit unsatisfactory to me. I had a bad feeling about the bomb squad guy as soon as he showed up, but it kind of disappointed me that he was the one who masterminded the robbery.

At first, when we see it go down in Allison’s dream, it looked as though the bomb squad guy looked at the situation, saw a giant bag of cash, and realized he was in a unique position to get very rich, very quickly. An officer of the law getting greedy and taking over a bank robbery midway through is much more interesting to me than an officer who was just bad from the beginning and orchestrated the entire robbery.

What I found much more interesting in this episode was Ariel’s plotline, with her classmate Jaime, and her pill-popping mom. The whole scene with Jaime’s mom convincing her to tell everyone she was driving and explaining that her record wasn’t exactly clean, is kind of creepy, as was the newspaper article Ariel saw about Jamie’s mom eventually killing her in a car accident.

Here’s what I don’t get though: Ariel convinced Jaime not to drive with her mom to and from school anymore, and is helping her get her own license, but does Ariel honestly believe that Jaime will never be in a car again with her mother behind the wheel? How realistic is that? I’ve had my driver’s license for quite some time, and I still find myself in the passenger seat of my parents’ car fairly often.

How is Jaime supposed to tell her mother that she is never going to ride with her again, for the rest of their lives? Because Ariel’s solution only addresses Jaime: it doesn’t have anything to do with Jaime’s mother getting the help that she needs in order to stop being a danger to herself and others.

Joe and Allison have always been the kind of parents who encourage their children to be open and honest with them, and to come to them if they’re in a situation that they feel is frightening. So it’s weird to me that while Ariel emphatically told her parents that she was not going to be riding anywhere with Jaime’s mom anytime soon, she failed to mention why.

In all, while I mostly forgive Medium for the egregious product placement, I have to say this is the weakest episode of the season so far. Neither the A or the B plot completely worked for me– and while there were some fun moments (mostly provided by the newly funny Joe), I came away a little unsatisfied. However, there’s always next week, and it looks like it’s going to be a good one.

Patricia Arquette to appear on the 40th season of Sesame Street

Sesame Street is celebrating its 40th season, beginning on November 10, and is boasting an impressive roster of celebrity guests including First Lady Michelle Obama, Ricky Gervais, Paul Rudd, and Medium’s very own Patricia Arquette. Arquette appears about midway through the season in an episode about amphibians.

Her co-star is the lovable Abby Cadabby, and they talk about the “Word on the street,” which is “metamorphosis.” This link has the episode description and an adorable photo of Arquette and Abby. I haven’t found a video of her appearance yet, but here’s one of some highlights from the upcoming season. It looks hysterical.

Ratings for Medium 6×07 “New Terrain” – Another off night

Granted, my theory that last week’s ratings lows were based on people being out at Halloween parties wasn’t entirely serious, but I did believe that the low ratings were an anomaly. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case, as Medium scored the same ratings as it did last week, and for the first time, lost the hour.

Scoring a total viewership of 7.6 million, and a 1.8 in the 18-49 group, Medium lost the 9:00 hour to a special two-hour episode of Law & Order. L&O garnered 8.0 million and a 1.8 at 8:00, but grew its audience in the second hour, ending up with 8.4/1.9. This is the first time all season that Medium has been up against a new scripted episode, and the first time it did not win in its time slot. The two hour episode really worked for Law & Order, as it significantly raised its ratings from last week, in which they only garnered 7.0 million total viewers and 1.4 in the 18-49 group at 8:00.

Unfortunately, the bad ratings news continues for Medium, as it was also the lowest-rated out of CBS’s Friday night lineup. While it has been trading first and second place with Ghost Whisperer, Medium has consistently pulled in higher numbers than Numb3rs. However, once again, Numb3rs beat Medium, but just barely. While it came out ahead in total viewers with 8.1 million, it tied in the 1-49 demographic with 1.8.

The good news, is that despite Law & Order’s impressive gain in viewers and ABC’s episode of 20/20 featuring an interview with Rihanna about her abusive ex-boyfriend Chris Brown, which trounced everything else in the 10:00 hour, CBS still won the night. They easily beat the other networks in total viewers, and tied with ABC for the 18-48 demo (the 20/20 interview scored a whopping 2.7). So even though Medium may have taken a little dip, there’s no cause for real alarm quite yet. However, if CBS doesn’t continue to win the night, then we may have something to worry about.

Sofia Vassilieva reveals her favorite movie scene

Recently, Sofia Vassilieva spoke with Movieline and talked about her favorite movie scene. It’s not one of Patrica Arquette, or Jake Weber’s, or a scene from any of the movies her Medium castmates have done. Her favorite scene is from the 2006 James Franco film, Tristan + Isolde. Vassilieva says,

“You know? I’m going to be really corny. It’s Tristan + Isolde, the scene in the marketplace where they’re sneaking hand-holding. It’s so sweet, romantic, and ancient. The loss of courtship in modern days — like, people don’t court anybody anymore. There’s no beauty about it. And the sweetness and the tenderness and the way that people kind of used to court others is so beautiful, and I love themes of forbidden love and I love that can’t ever be.”

I’ve never seen the film, but I can see why that would be appealing to her. I couldn’t find the scene she was talking about it, but here’s one from Tristan + Isolde with a lot of longing stares from across the room!
