Vulnerability in the ActiveX Control for the Snapshot Viewer for Microsoft Access Could Allow Remote Code Execution

Microsoft is investigating active, targeted attacks leveraging a potential vulnerability in the ActiveX control for the Snapshot Viewer for Microsoft Access. An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by constructing a specially crafted Web page. When a user views the Web page, the vulnerability could allow remote code execution. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the logged-on user.

The ActiveX control for the Snapshot Viewer for Microsoft Access enables you to view an Access report snapshot without having the standard or run-time versions of Microsoft Office Access. The vulnerability only affects the ActiveX control for the Snapshot Viewer for Microsoft Office Access 2000, Microsoft Office Access 2002, and Microsoft Office Access 2003.

The ActiveX control is shipped with all supported versions of Microsoft Office Access except for Microsoft Office Access 2007. The ActiveX control is also shipped with the standalone Snapshot Viewer.

Using Microsoft PowerPoint 2003:

1. Create a New Presentation.
2. Right-click on the slide and select Slide Design.
3. Notice that a lists of slide design is visible at the right side.
4. Now, select your favorite slide design that you wish to use every time.
5. Right-click on that design and select “Use for All New Presentation”.
6. And now, you have set a default theme.
7. Then, try to create a new presentation and notice that the default theme was loaded automatically.

Using Microsoft PowerPoint 2007:

1. Create a New Presentation.
2. Click on the Design menu.
3. Notice that a lists of slide design is visible at the top.
4. Now, select your favorite slide design that you wish to use every time.
5. Right-click on that design and select “Set as Default Theme”.
6. And now, you have set a default theme.
7. Then, try to create a new presentation and notice that the default theme was loaded automatically.

Now, Microsoft unveiled Microsoft Equipt, which was code-named ‘Albany‘ earlier this year.

Microsoft Equipt offers consumers Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007, giving them the latest versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote for their personal and school projects; Windows Live OneCare, the all-in-one security and PC management service; Windows Live tools, such as Windows Live Mail, Windows Live Messenger and Windows Live Photo Gallery so they can connect and share with people they care about most; and Office Live Workspace, a new service from Microsoft that makes it easy to save documents to a dedicated online Workspace and share them with friends and classmates. Anytime a new version of Office or Windows Live OneCare is released, Microsoft Equipt customers will get the version upgrades as part of their subscriptions.

The Microsoft Equipt will be out in mid-July 2008 and will be available in the US through Circuit City stores. The retail price would be $69.99 for a one-year renewable subscription. According to Bryson Gordon, group product manager, Microsoft Office, “With Microsoft Equipt we’re improving our customers’ computing experience by giving them essential software in a package that offers an easy install and setup experience, as well as a convenient and affordable way to stay updated with the latest versions of Office and Windows Live OneCare.”

Basically, what the Gears does is create a cache of your web applications locally and stores it in a database - therefore speeding up application loading. It runs in background, updating every necessary files needed by your application without sacrificing your browsers productivity.

Wordpress.com now integrated the technology of Gears, enabling bloggers to manage their blog sites faster.

On WordPress.com it is used to store all images and other web page components from the admin area to the user’s PC, speeding up access and reducing unnecessary web traffic.

The speed increase is most noticeable when Internet is slow or on high latency and makes everybody’s blogging experience more enjoyable.

To enable this new feature, click on the “Turbo” link and follow it to Gears’ site to install it in your browser (if not already installed). Then the browser will have to be restarted and after logging back in WordPress, click the “Turbo” link again to give permission to Gears to work on WordPress.com.

If you have downloaded some Powerpoint file and liked the design, you might then want to save the design as a template for later use. To do that, please do the following:

1. Open your Powerpoint file that you wish to save it as template.
2. Click ‘View’ menu.
3. Click the ‘Slide Master’ submenu in the menu bar.
4. Notice that the master slide is now active.
5. Having the master slide active, click ‘File> Save as > Select Powerpoint Template as the File Type’
6. After saving the design, click ‘Close Master View’, and it will go back to your Powerpoint Presentation.
7. Now, you can use the saved Template when creating a new Presentation. It will be automatically added in the list of designs.
