The very best thing about these award winning books (Parents’ Choice Gold Award, National Parenting Publications Association Award (NAPPA) Honors Award, Children’s Music Web Award and nominations for both a Juno and Félix Award) is that they are bilingual. They are innovative, creative, artistic beyond what I have seen lately, and linguistically simple.

Dream Songs Night Songs From Belgium to Brazil, A Duck in New York City, Down at the Sea Hotel are all available from The Secret Mountain. Each comes with it’s own CD of lullabies or songs.

Thanksgiving is only a week away in our house, as there is no school three days prior to the actual day. So, we celebrate with doctor appointments, teacher conferences, and cleaning the house. This year, however, we will also be packing and preparing for a wonderful trip to Guatemala to adopt our second son. We are truly and wonderfully thankful for that experience, for him, his birth family, and his foster family.

During those three days prior to Thanksgiving AJ, my oldest, and I will be decorating the house with wonder for him (nothing too overstimulating of course). And, most of it is for AJ’s enjoyment and fascination, as he loves crafts and decorations. Sometimes I think he might become an artist because he is wickedly creative.

As for every holiday here at One Book, we are offering up a listing of the best arts and craft, activities, and misc. things to do with kids.

However, we also have the BEST BOOKS (of course) over in our PAGES section. That is where you will find all the new links to our book listings, as we are reorganizing the site to make it easier for you to find our book lists. So, make sure you check out the BEST THANKSGIVNG BOOKS FOR KIDS and make sure you order a few too! You still have time! I know AMAZON ships speedy quick when they want to!

Have a pine tree in your yard and easy access to pine cones? I did when I grew up. If you do, get ready to make a Turkey Cone!

Are you a football family? Make a pillow to snuggle on.

Need some last minute fun? Printables for all the littles.

Keep them cyber busy while you mash…

Have some extra crafty kids? Send them to Martha Stewart for some hefty crafts.

Although I always thought of story writing as something achieved with words first and pictures after (even though I might have scenes in my head), I’ve discovered that many young writers work better if they start out by sketching.

“I like to doodle,” one youngster told me during a writing workshop I taught at his school. “Then when I see something taking shape, I write about it.”

Other youngsters draw realistic pictures about the stories in their heads, then put the ideas into words. Maybe they’ll draw a picture of something they see from a window, viewed on a outing, or did at home.

This practice also is used most of the time with youngsters I work with in kindergarten or first grade. They might draw a picture in their journal or on a piece of paper, then write some words describing it or dictate the words to their teacher or parent.

If you haven’t tried drawing pictures for story beginnings, why not do it yourself and with the children in your class or family? These don’t have to be good pictures…just something to get the ideas flowing.

Making predictions does not come naturally to all of us but it is a necessary step to becoming a good and successful reader. To be able to predict means being able to use cause and effect and cognitive thinking skills.

When I was teaching middle school I would incorporate predictions into every reading log and students would predict at the end of each chapter or reading session, even if it was as simple as “the girl will go into the house”.

Another activity you can do is make predictions on what will happen in the story based just upon the title. This best works with an entire class.

The final activity that I loved to use is to make predictions as we were reading as an entire class. I would make a t-chart on the board for the class with predictions on the left and evidence on the right. Before we began reading I would ask students what their predictions for the chapter were. As we were reading students would add evidence that proved their predictions came true or evidence their predictions were disproved.

In sum, predictions work well to make students think about what they are reading. Active thinking and active reading make active learners.

Melinda begins her high school career as a social outcast because she called the cops from an end-of-the-summer party. Her friends think she called the cops to break up the party, but only she knows the real reason. Consequently, from day one of high school, Melinda’s friends shun her and she retreats into her own self to fight internal demons. She doesn’t speak to anyone, she doesn’t do her homework, she doesn’t go to class, she doesn’t shower, and she certainly doesn’t talk to her parents or go out of her way to make any friends.

Finally, her almost nonexistent parents begin to notice her changes and try to help. But what is the cause of these changes? Melinda won’t reveal what really happened to her at that party. But when the same thing almost happens again, Melinda fights back and finally speaks.
Anderson expertly chronicles a young girl’s traumatic first year of high school and a young girl’s struggle with rape and relationships. Melinda speaks to us with wit, humor, and anguish. Her rite of passage is evoked by a stranger and ends with her own strength and courage.

After a long line of celebrities that offer young girls examples of drugs, drunkenness and jail time, Sarah Palin comes through as a breath of fresh air, providing them with a vision of accomplishment, goals achieved and patriotism.

Has she made mistakes - Yes.

Is she perfect - No

Are all celebrities poor role models - No

However, Sarah Palin offers a vision for girls (and their moms and grandmothers), that they can be all round youngsters and teens, can believe in themselves and their ideals….and go on to achieve what they set their mind on that is good and right.

What do you want to be in your life? Give it some thought and set some goals. Then set a plan into action for achieving it.

Let me know how you’re making out.
