I am a big fan of Netbooks/UMPC/Ultra mobile pc and finally I found a small netbook that is under 700USD, small and thin and has enough computing power to do 60-70% of my job. For months I have been going through magazines, stores and websites waiting for a netbook that fit my requirements and at last came Lenovo S10. My post on my new Lenovo S10 is — I have Finally Given in to a Netbook, Lenovo IdeaPad S10.

It has been under three days since I bought the small computer and until now, I haven’t decided what to do with it. The Lenovo S10 comes with Windows XP home edition SP3 but there is no way I am going to use that version. Development tools from Microsoft are not allowed to be installed in the home edition and at the very least I would have to upgrade to Windows XP Professional SP3 version. I am also contemplating on either installing Windows 2003 Server edition, Windows Vista Enterprise or even Windows 7. From the Lenovo site, all drivers especially BIOS drivers were tagged as Windows XP and most probably I would need to retain XP and dual boot with another operating system.

Again, I haven’t decided but would need to soon to be able to utilize my newly bought netbook. I would update you on what I decide to install in the S10.

I am reading this post from MaximumPC about the release of Windows 1.0 25 years ago. The announcement was made by Bill Gates in 1983 at New York’s Helmsley Palace Hotel. He then announced that Windows 1.0 would be released in 1984; but as it turned out, they were a year late by releasing 1.0 in 1985. In the first iteration of Windows, a new era of graphical computing power was seen.

Half a century later, Microsoft is still committed to user interface design as seen in Vista and still late in their actual production release. :)

Microsoft sales on Windows Vista has slowed down in the past quarter and the release of Windows 7 has not helped either. But amidst the slowdown, the U.S. military itself has launched the program to upgrade 30,000 PCs to Windows Vista to ensure the higher level of security of the organization.

The U.S. military upgrade would be done for the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine personnel on the Korean peninsula according to an official military publication as reported by InformationWeek.

In an excerpt: The computers must be upgraded in order to remain compatible with new security features installed on the Korea LandWarNet, a computer network that links all U.S. fighting forces in the region. Computers not capable of running Vista will be upgraded to a special version of Windows XP.

The project is expected to be completed in February.

Vista can use the boost, as sales of the operating system have flatlined. Microsoft’s client unit posted a revenue gain of just 2% in the most recent quarter.

In Microsoft’s yearly security intelligence report, 5 of the top 10 browser attacks were due to Windows XP. Unlike in Windows Vista, none of the attacks are because of the operating system.

Most of the attacks in Vista are due to ActiveX controls found in Internet explorer. ActiveX controls are used by IE add-ons and users are asked to install the ActiveX control for the add-on to work.

I think whether these attacks were due to Windows Vista itself or ActiveX; Vista still has something to do with it. Given that XP attacks were due to its own self and not ActiveX, only means that Microsoft can make Vista secure enough for ActiveX control based attacks. In part, Vista is still the culprit of it.

I cannot remember the last time taskmgr could not close the application or end the process especially when it is as common as Windows Media Player (see image above). I think this experience only happened in Windows 95 and Windows XP without the service pack updates.

Today, I am so frustrated because I could not restart my laptop and my Windows Media Player is not responding anymore. I tried to remove the disc, ended the process in the taskmgr, and also ended the application. None of this worked in my Windows Vista computer.

Oh well, I’d have to accomplish all my task and restart my PC to solve this problem.
