This Week in Austin | The Cool Kids, White Denim, My Morning Jacket, Nas
To be fair, I find something exciting in the Austin music scene just about every week. However, this week the cream of the crop is playing both in local and roadshows. There really is something for everyone, but too many hard choices must be made. My Morning Jacket or Nas & Talib Kweli is an impossible dilemma. Which would you pick?
Full recommendations below for your viewing pleasure.
Wednesday 8/20
The Cool Kids (w/ DJ Mel & Free Sol) at Emo’s
Definitely a hip-hop throwback, Chicago’s The Cool Kids take the old and make it new. Think 80’s Beastie Boys meets 00’s hip.
Death Is Not A Joyride (inside after Xiu Xiu) @ Mohawk
Dark art-rock that’s not for the faint of heart. Check them out on Feedback Vol 1.
Thursday 8/21
White Denim (w/ Brazos, Zookeeper & Peel) at Mohawk
Fresh off a European tour, White Denim is bringing their high intensity garage rock back home to Austin.
The Story Of (w/ Vinyl Dharma & A Fault Chromosome) at Stubb’s
Another band featured on Feedback Vol 1, don’t miss The Story Of inside at Stubb’s. Their harmonious indie pop is instantly catchy and will get stuck in your head. MTV2 will be in attendance taping Vinyl Dharma’s set.
Friday 8/22
The Melvins (w/ Big Business) at Emo’s
The Melvins have been around long enough to inspire Nirvana. But that’s not stopping them from touring in support of their latest release. The Melvins will also be at Waterloo Records on Friday for a signing, starting at 5pm.
Bun B (w/ DJ Ayre & Orgone) at The Parish
Bun B is one of the founding fathers of Texas rap. Get your taste of the Third Coast style for free, courtesy of Scion. More info on how to RSVP can be found here.
Saturday 8/23
MC Chris (w/ Reggie & The Full Effect, Leathermouth & Warship) at Emo’s
Chris Ward IV aka MC Chris is no stranger to Aqua Teen Hunger Force fans. His “gangster geek” rapping has created lasting buzz amongst fans of so-called nerdcore.
Three Bad Jacks (w/ Klub Sin) at Red 7
A high energy mix of rockabilly and punk has kept 3 Bad Jacks in demand from their homebase in L.A. all the way to the east coast. Red 7 is a fantastic venue for this band; big enough to contain 3 Bad Jacks’ raucous energy.
Sunday 8/24
Nas & Talib Kweli at Emo’s
Though neither of these rappers should need much of an introduction, I suspect some of you may not be familiar. These progressive rappers have changed the voice of hip-hop. Expect nothing short of excellence from this show.
My Morning Jacket at Stubb’s
MMJ’s Memphis influence is undeniable; they handily fuse southern rock and country with psych and funk. Repeatedly named as one of the year’s top live shows, My Morning Jacket is a must-see.
