Is Your Baby Ready for Fireworks?
Now that there is a new baby in the house you want to be especially careful with the things you would normally do. For instance, you wouldn’t bring your baby to the bar with you on a Friday night or even to a wrestling match. But what about those holiday parades and celebrations? If you’ve never had a baby before or your child was older you may not be aware of the signs of whether your baby is ready for something like fireworks or loud parades.
Prepare your baby- if it is possible prepare your baby with some small fireworks at home. There are poppers, some small but noisy firecrackers and then there are of course your sparklers. Try each one out in front of him/her but not close. Feel their reaction and remember this is new to him or her so they may and may not like them.
Last night I took my baby down the street to see his first real firecrackers that a neighbor was setting off. While he liked looking at the ones that didn’t make noise (sparklers) he got scared with the ones that screamed or spun around. How did I know? He clung to me and hid his head.
Tip: If I take him to the fireworks display tonight I already know that his signs are hiding and clinging. If it gets too much we can always watch them from inside the car while daddy and the others watch from outside. This gives him the ability to see them without having to hear them, plus he’ll be in the comforts of his own vehicle which he knows.
Bring in the artillery- If you already know you are going to the fireworks displays around town make sure you bring the right stuff. Babies tend to get tired and sleepy so a good umbrella stroller would be great to have on hand. Now if you know you want them in one all day you may want to get a stroller with an under carriage to hold all the stuff. Take along a blanket as it will possibly get cold and he/she may want to snuggle. Grab the diaper bag with wipes, diapers, extra outfit and any food items they may need. A favorite toy may also help when he/she gets nervous around all the people and noise.
Tip: Grab some ear muffs or headphones if you think the noise might be too much.
Expect it- I’ve always stated expect the worse so that you are never surprised. If you expect your child to get upset or scared you’ll be more prepared. This is a new experience for him/her and they may love it or they might not. Things can always change next year if they don’t like it this year.
