Virtual Server, Windows Vista and IE

by Milo on April 27th, 2007

For some reason I am having problems installing Virtual Server on Windows Vista. It required me to install IIS and that’s fine, but after that it would still ask for IIS. That’s going to be my first problem, the second one would probably be running Virtual Server without IE administrator privileges.

Anyways, I have not yet figured out how to install Virtual Server, but I did found out how to run VS once installed. :) At least one problem was solved:

Below is what I found via softpedia (from Virtual PC Guy’s Weblog):

“For a while now we’ve been telling people that in order to access the Virtual Server web site when it is running on Windows Vista they need to run IE “as administrator”. “Needless to say most people are not happy with this,” stated Armstrong.

First off, user accounts have to be granted administrative privileges for Virtual Server. “To do this select Server Properties from the Virtual Server section of the navigation pane on the Virtual Server web site (you will need to run IE “as administrator” in order to do this). Then select Virtual Server security, Add entry, and create a new entry for your user account with full control. You need to do this because the UAC feature of Windows Vista stops Virtual Server from being able to detect that you’re a member of the administrators group, unless you’re running IE “as administrator”,” explained Armstrong.

The second step involves adding the URL for the Virtual Server website to the trusted sites via the tools menu in Internet Explorer. “You should now be able to open up the Virtual Server administrative website using the icon in the start menu, without needing to run the process “as administrator”,”

If any of you knows how to install Virtual Server on Windows Vista then send me an email via milo [@] b5media.com and I would feature it here. Thanks!
